Since our founding in 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has received significant support from the general public in our mission to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.

MADD does not respond to issues with a knee-jerk reaction. Our policies, programs and messages are based on solid, defensible science.

MADD is not against drinking for legal adults; however, we do support the legal drinking age because we want to protect young people from the serious dangers and consequences caused by alcohol both to themselves and to others. MADD is not a prohibitionist organization.

In addition to the more than 2,300 pieces of legislation we have worked to see passed, MADD has spent the last twenty years developing and providing:

  • Direct victim services through our local chapters: things like court accompaniment programs and support groups
  • Multimedia shows for elementary and secondary school kids
  • Alcohol use prevention curriculum for grades 1-5
  • Brochures and materials to victims, families, schools, students and concerned citizens
